Land & Property Conversion

Why Area Conversion Matters

We live in a world divided by measurement systems. If you watch a real estate show in the USA, the houses are measured in Square Feet. Watch the same show in Europe or Canada, and they are measured in Square Meters.

If you are buying flooring, paint, or fertilizer, getting this conversion wrong can leave you with half a painted room or double the carpet you need.

Housing: Sq Ft vs. Sq Meters

This is the most common conversion for travelers and expats. A "100 meter" apartment might sound small to an American, but it is actually quite spacious.

The Rule of 10 (Rough Estimate):
1 Square Meter is approximately 10.76 Square Feet.
Mental Math: Just multiply meters by 10. So, 100 sq meters ≈ 1,000 sq feet.

Land: Acres vs. Hectares

When you move from inside the house to the land outside, the units change completely.

  • Acre (ac): The standard Imperial unit (US/UK). Historically defined as the amount of land one man could plow in one day with an ox.
  • Hectare (ha): The Metric standard. One hectare is a square with 100m sides (10,000 m²).

Comparison Chart

Unit Metric Equivalent Real World visual
1 Square Foot 0.09 m² A standard floor tile (12x12 inch)
1 Acre 0.4 Hectares Roughly 75% of a Football Field
1 Hectare 2.47 Acres A standard International Rugby Pitch
1 Sq Mile 2.59 km² Central Park, NY (approx 1.3 sq miles)

Scientific Notation (E+ numbers)

If you try to convert very large numbers (like converting Square Kilometers to Square Inches), you might see a result like 1.55e+9. This is scientific notation. It simply means the number is too long to fit on the screen, so we shorten it. You generally only see this for physics calculations, not real estate.
