The New 2025 Army Tape Test Explained

Effective June 2023, the U.S. Army updated its **Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)** with a major change: the move to a simplified "One-Site" tape test. This new standard replaces the older method that required measuring the neck (for everyone) and hips (for women).

This calculator uses the **official 2025 algorithm** derived from Army Directive 2023-11, ensuring your results match what you would see during an official weigh-in.

Why the Change?

The previous multi-site tape test was often criticized for being inaccurate, particularly for muscular soldiers who had thick necks or wider hips due to muscle mass rather than fat. The Army conducted a comprehensive study comparing various measurement methods against DXA scans (the "gold standard" of body composition) and found that the single measurement around the abdomen provided a more reliable correlation to actual body fat percentage for the general force.

Important Exemption: Soldiers who score **540 or higher** on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), with a minimum of 80 points in each event, are universally **exempt** from body fat taping, regardless of their height or weight.

Maximum Allowable Body Fat Standards

If you do not meet the initial Height/Weight screening table, you must pass the body fat tape test. The maximum allowable percentage depends on your age and gender.

Age Group Male Maximum Limit Female Maximum Limit
17 - 20 20% 30%
21 - 27 22% 32%
28 - 39 24% 34%
40 and over 26% 36%

How to Measure Yourself Correctly

To get an accurate result at home that mimics the official test:

  • Waist Measurement: Place the measuring tape around your waist at the level of your belly button (umbilicus). The tape should be level with the floor.
  • Technique: Measure against the skin. The tape should be snug but not compressing the soft tissue.
  • Rounding: Round your measurement to the nearest **0.5 inch** (e.g., if you measure 34.25", round to 34.5").

What Happens if You Fail?

Soldiers who exceed the body fat standard are typically enrolled in the ABCP. This involves mandatory nutrition counseling and monthly monitoring. However, under the new directive, soldiers who fail the tape test may request a **supplemental assessment** using advanced methods like the InBody 770 or DXA scan to prove their body fat is within limits before being flagged.
