How to Calculate a Discount (The Formula)
Calculating a "Percent Off" price is a two-step process. You first determine the value of the discount, and then subtract it from the original price.
Savings = Price × (Percentage ÷ 100)
Example: 25% off a $60 jacket.
- Convert 25% to a decimal: 0.25.
- Multiply: $60 × 0.25 = $15 (This is your savings).
- Subtract: $60 - $15 = $45 (Final Price).
The "Mental Math" Trick (10% Rule)
You don't always have a calculator handy in the store. The easiest way to estimate a discount is to find 10% first.
Step 1: Move the decimal point one spot to the left.
- 10% of $50.00 is $5.00
- 10% of $24.99 is $2.50
Step 2: Multiply to find your target percentage.
- 20% off: Double the 10% number. ($5 x 2 = $10).
- 30% off: Triple the 10% number. ($5 x 3 = $15).
- 5% off: Cut the 10% number in half. ($5 / 2 = $2.50).
The Psychology of Pricing
Retailers use specific math tricks to make deals look better than they are.
The Rule of 100:
• For items under $100, stores use Percentages ("20% Off!"). It sounds like a bigger number than "$5 Off."
• For items over $100, stores use Dollars ("$500 Off!"). It sounds like more money than "15% Off."
• For items under $100, stores use Percentages ("20% Off!"). It sounds like a bigger number than "$5 Off."
• For items over $100, stores use Dollars ("$500 Off!"). It sounds like more money than "15% Off."
Percent Off vs. Price Drop
What is the difference? The formula is simply reversed. If a TV drops from $1,000 to $800, what was the percentage discount?
Formula: (Original - New) ÷ Original
- Difference: $1,000 - $800 = $200.
- Calculation: $200 ÷ $1,000 = 0.20.
- Result: 20% Off.
